Roof Insulation Scotland

Approved Roof Insulation Installers – Domestic Roofs, Commercial Roofs, Room in Room & More

Roof Insulation in Scotland

Roof insulation is debatably the most important type of home insulation there is, most of the heat in a property is lost through your roof, insulation comes in various forms wether it be pitched roof insulation for the main roof your house, flat roof insulation in your garage or other garden buildings etc, room in roof insulation or a commercial roof insulation project.

Although loft, underfloor and internal wall insulation are all important in their own right and to achieve a more insulated home overall, roof insulation is the most essential to protect your home from the outside elements.

You will struggle to find a roofing contractor or local roofer worth their salt, that would install a new roof without some form of insulation being fitted.

Most roof insulation is installed between your roof’s deck and roof surface, with the purpose being to keep out cold air from outside and retaining the heat from inside.

Why should I insulate my roof?

If you have the most suitable type of insulation material for your roof installed by professional roof insulation installers, it can improve heat retention by up to 45 percent.

Professional Roof Insulation Installers Scotland

Envirosmart Limited are approved roof insulation installers for a wide range of insulation material, including wool and spray foam insulation. For sustainable wool insulation we install a variety of high quality insulation materials including Thermafleece sheeps wool insulation and Knauf Earthwool & Rockwool products.

The company rarely installs spray foam insulation due to issues with home insurance and the effects it can have on certain roofs. We are however Icynene approved installers meaning spray foam can still be fitted on more suitable commercial insulation jobs and certain types of domestic projects.

There are other insulation products we can install including SuperQuilt multifoil and rigid PIR insulation boards.

    What Is Roof Insulation?

Simply put, roof insulation is a barrier made from insulation material installed on your roof, that prevents cold air from getting inside your property and retains the warm air inside. Roof insulation and loft insulation can often mean the same thing, this is due to the fact that your loft is always located at the very top of your home. The reason for the two terms is that there are many types of roof, not all of which are attached to a loft.

The types of roof insulation depend on what type of roof you have, flat or pitched? Listed below are some popular types of roof found in Scotland.

    Pitched Roof Insulation

Roof insulation for pitched roofs almost always means insulating a loft, where you can either install cold or warm roof insulation.

    Cold Pitched Roof Insulation

Cold roof insulation involves installing insulation material on top of and between the joists of your roof as well as the ceiling of the top floor of your home. This means that your home will be warm but your loft will still be cold, hence the name.

    Warm Pitched Roof Insulation

If you use your loft as a bedroom or living space, you will require warm roof insulation to be installed. Warm roof insulation is installed directly onto your roof, into the roofs pitch.

    Flat Roof Insulation

For flat roof insulation there are a few different kinds of insulation including inverted roof insulation, cold roof insulation also known as cold deck insulation and warm roof insulation.

    Inverted Flat Roof Insulation

For inverted roof insulation you need to install the finest of materials to ensure the roof is protected from the outside above the weather membrane. Effective inverted insulation is fitted with the weather proof membrane underneath it.
This method is slightly counter intuitive, meaning your roof deck is waterproofed, insulation is installed and ballast gravel stones are often placed on the top outer layer.

    Cold Deck Flat Roof Insulation

Cold deck insulation or cold roof insulation is where insulation is installed under the roof deck and joists. It is important to leave a gap to allow for ventilation and prevent condensation.

    Warm Deck Flat Roof Insulation

The last type of flat roof insulation is warm deck insulation or warm roof insulation, this is where insulation is fitted above the roof deck, popular in wet environments such as Scotland!

    How Does Roof Insulation Work?

Effective roof insulation creates a barrier on your roof that slows any heat transfer between the air outside and inside your home or property. This means it will prevent both warm and cold air from entering your indoor environment, meaning cooler air is kept inside in the summertime with hot stuff air being kept out and your warm air heated by your home’s central heating is kept inside during the winter with the cold Scottish wind and hail being kept out!
Insulation that is fitted between the joists of your roof help to keep the heat inside but your loft space will still be cold, if you insulated the rafters of your roof your loft space will be kept warm as well.
Simply put, roof insulation works by keeping cold air out and warm air inside!

    Roof Insulation Benefits

There are a wide range of benefits to having roof insulation installed in your home, we have listed some of the main ones below:

Effective roof insulation will store up to 45% more heat.

As a result of the improved heat retention benefits provided by roof insulation, your home should heat quicker requiring less time with your central heating turned on, therefore your monthly heating bills will decrease.

roof insulation will improve the EPC (energy performance certificate) rating of your home. Homes in Scotland should aim to have a recommend EPC rating of D or above.

Professional roof insulation should mean there are zero gaps in or between your roof.

Effective roof insulation will reduce dampness or mould on your whole roof area.

Roof insulation will provide another layer of protection for your roof and home from the elements outside, it will increase the lifespan of your roof.

Roof insulation will decrease CO2 emissions and prevent any additional unnecessary pollution in the air.

    Best Roof Insulation Material

The best insulation for insulating a roof follows exactly the same rules as the best loft insulation material click the link to find out more.

    Room in Roof Insulation

Room in roof insulation is when you insulate a loft that is used as a bedroom or living space. Generally speaking this is carried when you have your loft converted, however, not always, commonly people contact us after a loft conversion has been fitted when they find the insulation installed is not effective enough to make the space habitable.

    External Roof Insulation

External roof insulation is exactly what it sounds like, where insulation is fitted on the outside of your roof. Your roofs trusses are exposed after removal of any tiles or slates etc, you can then install suitable roof insulation material that is boarded up before the tiles or slates are re-attached.

    Internal Roof Insulation

There is a wide variety of internal roof insulation, most of which are listed above on this page. This is more common and generally effective than external roof insulation.

    Metal Roof Insulation

Metal roof insulation is installed in between the different layers of metal roofing or metal cladding, typically found on garages etc. Metal roof insulation reduces heat loss, and improves the acoustic performance, this is imperative for metal roofing to remove or at least reduce the drumming sound you can hear when its raining outside.

    Spray Foam Roof Insulation

Spray foam roof insulation is an effective roof insulation material especially for large commercial roofs in warehouses etc that are often flat roofs with metal cladding.

    Commercial Roof Insulation

Commercial roof insulation is big business, you can’t really have any type of commercial property with an un-insulated roof, especially ones that the public have access to.

Envirosmart Limited has installed hundreds of commercial roof installations that we can showcase during your free insulation survey.

    Roof Insulation Grant Scotland

There are government funded grants available for roof insulation as part of the ECO scheme available to homeowners and tenants in Scotland

Envirosmart Limited are TrustMark accredited, meaning we can install roof insulation using any grant funding you have been awarded.

To apply for a roof insulation grant, you should visit Home Energy Scotland who will guide you through your application. We are happy to assist you with this, meaning you will have an approved installer you can name when applying for your grant.

    Roof Insulation Cost Scotland

Just like all other types of home insulation we install, we can’t provide a cost or ballpark figure for roof insulation. Its completely pointless, the cost of roof insulation in Scotland depends on the size and surface area of your roof, the type of insulation material we install, the type of roof that you have and wether or not we have to remove any existing insulation, roof tiles, the list is almost endless!

If you want an accurate cost for roof insulation in Scotland, call us or complete our short contact to arrange a free insulation survey.
